TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. It's a type of elastomer that combines the properties of plastic and rubber. TPU is a versatile material known for its flexibility, durability, and resistance to abrasion, oil, grease, and various chemicals. It can be molded, extruded, or 3D printed due to its thermoplastic nature, meaning it can be heated and shaped multiple times without undergoing significant degradation.

Applications

TPU's balance of elasticity, resistance, and processability makes it a highly desirable material in various industries and manufacturing processes.

footwear

In shoe soles, particularly sports and outdoor shoes, owing to its flexibility and shock absorption properties.

sporting goods

Used in the production of sportswear, protective gear, and equipment due to its impact resistance.

Consumer Elelectronics

TPU is used in phone cases, covers, and cables because of its durability and ability to absorb impact.

automotive industry

Utilized in car parts, interior upholstery, and seals due to its resistance to oil, abrasion, and flexibility.

medical devices

In healthcare, TPU is used in medical tubing, catheters, and other devices due to its biocompatibility and flexibility.

textiles

TPU-coated fabrics are used in outdoor gear, backpacks, and waterproof clothing due to its water-resistant properties.

Technical Specifications

  1. Hardness: Measured on the Shore Hardness scale (A or D). TPUs can range from very soft (Shore 60A) to very hard (Shore 80D). Supply from HP MJF is normally approx Shore 88-95A
  2. Tensile Strength: Typically ranges from 30 MPa to 60 MPa or higher, depending on the grade and intended use.
  3. Elongation at Break: Often between 400% and 600%, indicating the material's ability to stretch before breaking.
  4. Abrasion Resistance: TPUs are known for excellent abrasion resistance compared to many other polymers.
  5. Flexural Modulus: Can range from approximately 200 MPa to 600 MPa or more, indicating the material's stiffness and flexibility.
  6. Density: Commonly around 1.2 to 1.3 g/cm³, but this can vary based on the specific formulation.
  7. Melting Point: Typically ranges between 180°C to 220°C, although this can also differ depending on the specific TPU formulation.
  8. Chemical Resistance: Some TPUs exhibit good resistance to oils, greases, and certain chemicals, but the specific resistance can vary based on the formulation.
  9. Weather Resistance: TPU can be formulated to be resistant to weathering effects, including exposure to UV radiation and temperature changes.
  10. Transparency: TPU materials can range from completely transparent to opaque, depending on the intended use and formulation.
